Less Gear = More Creativity = More Challenge
I think I lost about 5kg this trip—or more accurately, my backpack did (compared to the previous trip). While some people enjoy a physical challenge in their free time, I prefer a creative challenge during my vacations!
I often regret leaving equipment behind, because you only miss it when you don’t have it, which usually results in a heavy backpack.
This vacation, I decided to limit myself, which forced me to think more creatively and embrace the challenge.
When shooting videos or photos, you’re constantly making decisions—choosing the right settings for the lens, camera, and other accessories. At some point, this becomes second nature, which is great when working for clients. But to grow, you need to step out of that comfort zone, and I love doing this during my vacations!
To encourage this, and to save my back from a hernia, I bought a new camera bag—not a bigger one, but a smaller one! This forces me to make different choices, especially regarding the gear I bring along.
I took this a step further when we visited the gorillas during this trip, requiring a 4-hour trek through dense jungle. To keep my bag as light as possible, I opted for a medium-zoom lens.
There were a few shots I would have loved to take if I had the right equipment with me, but I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and am thrilled with the results!
What limitations do you place on yourself to be challenged?
Enjoy the pictures!
